Student Employees are in part-time positions hired for short-term projects not to exceed one thousand (1,000) hours per year. Unless otherwise stated or as prescribed by law, National University does not provide student employees with benefits including accrued sick and vacation, health and life insurance, or other benefits.   • Students enrolled and active in any degree program
  • Students in good academic standing and who maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress

Position Summary

The Doctoral Peer Navigator (DPN) is a part-time student employee position at National University that supports active doctoral students, who are typically between completing their third course and beginning their first dissertation sequence. This role provides peer support, connects students with resources, and promotes persistence and success while fostering academic engagement and a sense of belonging within the doctoral community. Doctoral Peer Navigators are expected to attend mandatory training(s) and monthly professional development sessions. This is a pilot program, and preference will be given to students who can commit to one full year. The role is subject to change***

Essential Functions:
  • Host live, open group sessions for their assigned cohort of students (Saturdays required).
  • Host one-on-one appointments with students to provide personalized support, encouragement, and resource referrals.
  • Prepare supplemental instructional materials required for the small group sessions as necessary.
  • Complete documentation that is related to student interactions.
  • Refer students as needed to other student services departments.
  • Respond to emails and/or direct messages from students, faculty, and the Peer Navigator team.
  • Work with D2L, SharePoint, video conferencing, the Commons, and other university systems as needed.
  • Provide regular feedback and updates to their direct supervisor, leadership, and faculty supported.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing trainings.
  • Participate in monthly professional development.
  • Attend 1:1 meetings with the direct supervisor.
  • Attend all mandatory training and weekly staff meetings.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance is required for this position.
Requirements:
  • Must be a current student at National University who is active and enrolled in a doctoral degree awarding program
  • Must be actively enrolled in the first Doctoral Dissertation course sequence (DIS 9100A/B or DIS 9911A/B).
  • Must have a demonstrated knowledge of the foundational components of the dissertation/applied project.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with other students.
  • Must commit to a minimum of 15 hours/per week, document time, log interactions, etc, with the exceptions of holidays. Students will not be paid when the university is closed
  • Students must have a dissertation chair recommendation; the chair can email ...@nu.edu with the student recommendation letter.
  • Participate in an initial 4-week training, which includes attending the in-person Dissertation Bootcamp, as well as any additional training required throughout the year.
  • May require 10-20% of travel. All required travel expenses will be paid for by National University.
  • Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
  • Good academic standing and with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Technical / Functional Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience leading or facilitating small groups, preferably in an academic setting
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new platforms and technology tools as needed
  • Ability to work independently and work well with a team of diverse cultures while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies. Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
