Position Responsibilities

Position Summary - The Department of Culture, Society and Justice at the University of Idaho invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor of Criminology, a full-time, non-tenure track position starting in August of 2026. While this position will primarily be expected to contribute to online course delivery for the University of Idaho, this position will also be expected to teach one course per semester on the College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls. All areas of specialization will be considered, but we are particularly seeking areas that complement our current course offerings and department strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core service courses offered in our Master of Sciences degree in criminology and our undergraduate degree program in criminology (e.g., Introduction to Criminology, Justice Institutions, Criminological Theory, Research Methods in Criminology, and/or Justice Policy Issues). Faculty are also encouraged to teach in their specialty areas within criminology and contribute to areas such as internship supervision and mentorship and advising of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position is also expected to contribute to our growing Prison Education Initiative (PEI) program, which requires teaching one course per year to incarcerated students in Idaho. The standard teaching load is a 3/4 (seven classes per academic year).

Administrative Summary

Contingency Description - This appointment is contingent on funding and/or work to support the position. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event of insufficient funding and/or work, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may: (1) change this Agreement by adjusting the employee's FTE and annual salary throughout the contract year; or (2) terminate this Agreement and employee's employment prior to the end of the term of appointment, upon 60 days written notice or such lesser amount of notice as the funding or sponsoring agency had to give to the University before decreasing or terminating funding for the employee's position. Employee further acknowledges and agrees that in the event termination for insufficient funding becomes necessary, the notice provisions of Faculty Staff Handbook 3900B will not apply.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Degree Required - Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.

Required Qualifications - Masters in criminology, criminal justice, law & society, or a closely related field. Experience developing and/or teaching criminology courses; Certification to teach incarcerated students obtained soon after hire; Willingness to teach incarcerated students.

Preferred Qualifications - Ph.D. in criminology, criminal justice, law & society, or a closely related field (a JD does not meet the minimum educational requirements for this position). Experience teaching online courses; Evidence of teaching effectiveness at a college or university.
