Job Summary 

Under the supervision of the Youth Services Department Head, this position is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Youth Services Department. This person assists with interacting with the public, interpreting service policies, rules, and fees, and providing informational services to children, parents and other patrons.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists patrons in the use of the collections and catalogs of the Youth Services Department.  Answers entry-level reference questions. 

  • Assists patrons by telephone and in-person with routine procedural and directional questions.

  • Participates in some Youth Services programming as assigned by Youth Services Department Head. 

  • Assists in the marketing and maintenance of youth collections, including creating displays.

  • Performs general library duties including but not limited to opening and closing procedures; troubleshoots computer issues; dealing with security functions as they relate to the children, parents, and other patrons within the Department.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to relate to children and teens.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from diverse backgrounds, including youth, families, volunteers, and co-workers.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of computers, their operating systems, and programs likely to be used in libraries, including familiarity with the Internet, word processing and databases.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

  • Ability to adapt to change.

Physical Requirements

  • Carry up to 30lbs. of books across the library.

  • Constant walking, standing, speaking, hearing, and listening

  • Ability to push and pull library book trucks weighing 50-300 lbs.

Education

High School diploma or equivalent. Additional education and/or experience in a related field preferred.  

Expected Hours of Work

Flexibility in work schedule, including working evenings and some Saturdays.
